Although the province has a rich past, no murals older than the 18th century have been found there, according to the Fine Arts Department’s book, Murals Paintings, Suphan Buri. Some paintings and drawings of stupas and other motifs on bricks from the Dvaravati period from U Thong Ancient City and from several sites of the Ayutthaya period have been unearthed, but these are too small for historians and archaeologists to learn much about the history of those times.

According to Traditional Thai Paintings, by Wannipa Na Songkhla of the Fine Arts Department’s Archaeology Division, in 1990, murals in 31 temples in Suphan Buri were officially registered on the department’s List of Mural Paintings.

Many of the province’s murals were created between the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910) and the present.

These murals were mostly painted inside religious buildings. Their structures and contents are related to Buddhism and blended with the paintings of the way of life and traditions of those times. The contents involve the Lord Buddha’s life, jataka tales about the Lord Buddha’s previous incarnations, the Chulamanee Chedi, the pagoda in heaven which houses the Lord Buddha’s hair and tooth, the story of Phra Malai,  a monk who visited heaven and hell and travelled to the time of Phra Sri Ariya Metra_ the next Lord Buddha.
